Jakob Schroeder, minister and farmer, was born in the village of Bergthal, Southern Russia on August 8,1863 to Johan Schroeder and his third wife Maria (nee Dyck). He was one of the youngest in a family of 15 children. Two brothers named Jakob and a sister died in infancy before he was born. His birth and survival must have been a great joy to his parents. The Schroeder family immigrated to Canada in October 1874. Schroeder was baptized on June 14, 1883. Two years later he married Anna Spenst on November 22, 1885. They were married for 55 years and had 7 children together. Schroeder was elected to the ministry on February 26, 1908 in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church at Kronsweide and ordained by Aeltester Abraham Doerksen. Schroeder served the church preaching and officiating at special services until his death on March 11, 1941.
This fonds contians three notebooks of sermons with a record of where and when each sermon was preached. It also contains one notebook of funeral hymn texts including melody numbers for each hymn.
